Germany and Argentina; Face to face destiny
When the neighbors come around and trashed your newly decorated home at 11 dollar billion party, then it creates the scenario which Brazil has always feared. Ahead to Sunday’s final against Germany in Rio de Janeiro at the Maracana Stadium, the loudest message heard was “Anybody but Argentina.”
Argentina has not triumphed into the World Cup since 1986 but that wait could now be over Lionel Messi and co. see off the Germans. Germany wildly humiliated the Brazil in Semifinals of the Football World Cup’14 by defeating him by 7-1, but the final victory of Argentine World Cup might trump as an exercise in despair.
When Argentina defeated Netherlands on penalty kicks, then after reaching its fourth final, Argentina is targeting towards a third World Cup win. Argentina defeated Netherlands in 1978, which also hosted the tournament, by 3-1 after extra time in the final in Buenos Aires to spark the spectacular scenes of celebration.
Mario Kempes, was the hero who scored twice against Dutch side, which also had lost the game at the same stage, four years back, against the Germans. After eight years, Argentina was there in final once again where West Germany was the opposition and Argentina was leaded by Diego Maradona.
In that tough game, the wonderful pass of Maradona released Jorge Burruchaga to fire home with a dramatic 84th minute winner as Argentina was prevailed by the score 3-2. The German side which was coached by Franz Beckenbauer finally got its revenge after 4 years when Germany won by 1-0 in the final at Italy in 1990.
Later, Andreas Brehme won penalty game marred by the ill discipline manner of Argentina and sending off of two of its players. Germans danced on the entire field of Rome’s Olympic Stadium with the trophy they won so badly, coveted for a third time, while on the other hand, Maradona who was playing at Italian club side Napoli at that time, was severely left in tears.
The two teams met again in South Africa at the quarter finals of 2010 World Cup, which was almost after 20 years. Star player Lionel Messi failed to sparkle and Maradona on the other hand, as a coach watched on in horror as his side was thrashed 4-0.
The scoring was opened by Thomas Muller with Miroslav Klose, who is now the World Cup’s leading goal scorer adding two and Arne Friedrich, the fourth. It is all in one the Muller, towards whom the Argentina will be watching at Maracana on Sunday accompanied by Bayern Munich, moving forward to enjoy another impressive tournament.
Germany was beaten by the Brazil in the semifinals in 2006 and 2010, last reached the final in 2002. Klose told reporters that he knows how it feels to lose a final, and he also wants to lift that World Cup trophy up in the air and for that purpose, they have to give their all on Sunday.
Sunday is the party invitation for millions of Brazil Football fans, who had sought a sixth world cup crown so desperately.
