Improve Gmail Security with Google’s 2-step Verification
Previously, you may have heard that Google knows everything but now this has been rephrased. Nowadays the phrase is Hackers know it. They’ll take over your account and will later remove all your data and records.
If you are using Gmail and want to make your account secure, you must try the Google’s 2 step verification which is also known as Google verification. It is a two step process which will help you secure your account from all sorts of hackers and spammers. Once you have done this 2 step verification, Google ensures that your account is secured. This process will surely make the hackers work harder to hack your account. And before they can do it, you will be informed that someone is trying to login in your account.
2 step verification process:
The two steps that one has to do to secure his/her gmail account are:
- Enter the password
- Enter the security code that you have got on your cell phone
So, by picked this 2 step verification, firstly you would have to enter the password and later on in the process you have to provide the security code that you will receive on your cell phone when you will try to login I your gmail account.
Apart from these there are two other options which you can also select to make your account more secure:
- Selecting the option for remembering your device for the next 30 days, so that you don’t have to enter the code over and over again before logging in your account. After 30 days you either have to enter the password or have to enter the code. If someone else will try to login through your account, he/she would have to enter the code.
- You can also set up a backup code which you can use while your cell phone is not in your reach or due to any other reasons is not accessible.
Things to know before starting:
There are many applications that you are using nowadays which does not use 2-step verification. In this type of case you have to generate an application specific password and you can use that password in order to enable the application with your Google account.
Some of the examples of these applications are:
- AdWords Editor
- All the applications found on Android, Windows, iPhone, etc.
- Chat clients
- Email clients
- Google voice mobile application
In getting access to these types of applications, you must use the application specific password to get the access instead of using your Google account password. And now you can make as many accounts on various chat clients and applications easily.
How to enable the 2-step verification protection?
To enable the 2-step verification protection you have to login to your Google account. You have to enter your email id and password. Once logged in you will be conveyed to your gmail Inbox. From here the main steps begin:
Go to the settings option in the extreme right corner as shown below:
When you will click on the settings option, a new page will open as shown below:
Click on the Accounts and Import tab on the top of the page:
Now click on the other Google Account settings, to start the 2-step verification process:
Click on the Security tab:
Now begins the real process. Click on the Setup which is in front of the 2-step verification:
Now, click on the start setup to enter the real 2-step verification process:
You will be asked to enter your email id and password. Once you have given the required details, you will be directed to the given below page. Here you will enter your country and mobile number and an option through which you want to receive the codes in future and press send code button:
Now a verification code will be sent to your mobile number. Enter the code and click on the verify button:
When your code will be verified, you will be directed to the page where you will be asked whether to remember the computer/laptop you are using or not and press “Next”:
You will be taken to the page where you have confirms whether you want to enable the 2-step verification or not:
The 2-step verification is completed. And when done you will be redirected to the page with all your data.
If you want, you can also set a backup, which you can use when your primary device (your mobile number) is not in your range or not accessible.
How to create a backup for your Google account?
To create the backup, you have to give another phone number which you can use in emergency. Unfortunately, if you have lost your cell phone or your cell phone is not in range or you have forgotten your cell phone somewhere and want to access your account, you can use this backup number.
When your verification will be enabled, you will be redirected to a page where you can see all your personal data. There you can see an option “Backup Options”. Click on the “Add a Phone Number” to enter your backup number:
Provide the required information. You can also ask for the code (this option is used when you have to check whether the backup phone is working properly or not). And click save button.
You can always disable the 2-step verification from the setting option. If you want to change any of the information, you can do it by going in the settings option.
